Harwich Haven Authority continue their commitment to the Harwich Swim Safe programme

Harwich Haven Authority is once again partnering with Swim England and the RNLI to fund the delivery of a Swim Safety programme in Dovercourt Bay during July and August.

The free Swim Safe sessions are focused on teaching school-aged children, how to stay safe and what to do if they get into difficulties in, on, and around open water.  Everyone between the ages of 7 and 14 years old, who can swim 25 metres unaided, is welcome to take part.

Tendring Water Safety Forum member, Harwich Haven Authority, support of the Dovercourt Swim Safe programme will ensure that children have access to this invaluable experience either through their school or via public sessions.

Tendring District Council is also funding a Swim Safe programme in Clacton, which will run during August.

“This is the third year that we have funded the Swim Safe programme in Dovercourt Bay and over that time we estimate that nearly 1,500 children have attended a session,“ says Neil Glendinning, Chief Executive, Harwich Haven Authority.

“As the East of England’s largest trust port our organisational remit is to ensure safety of all users of the Haven’s waters  from the largest vessels afloat to individual members of our community enjoying a dip.. The Swim Safe programme very much aligns to our remit and we believe that it’s vital that young people understand the dangers of being in and around open water.

“Unfortunately, through the recent heatwave more young people have lost their lives while swimming in open water, so it’s even more important than ever that children take advantage of these free sessions.

“I am convinced the work Swim England and the RNLI are doing to educate young people through this programme is vitally important and will ultimately save lives. ”

Ashley Jones, Swim England’s Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Manager, commented:

“The Covid pandemic impacted children greatly and research suggests that during the 2020-21 academic year, 240,000 fewer children were able to swim 25 metres compared to the previous academic years.

“With many families still choosing to stay local for summer breaks, it is even more important for youngsters to attend Swim Safe sessions, which provide crucial water safety advice.

“We are immensely grateful to Harwich Haven Authority for funding the 2022 Swim Safe programme in Dovercourt.”

The public Swim Safe sessions are now available to book.

A night to remember at the Tendring Youth Awards 2022

Harwich Haven Authority were the headline sponsor at the 2022 Tendring Youth Awards, in partnership with Essex County Council and Tendring District Council.

On Tuesday 5 July 2022, Harwich Haven Authority’s Corporate Affairs team attended a glitzy presentation evening at the Princes Theatre, Clacton, to celebrate young people from Harwich and Dovercourt who demonstrate determination, enthusiasm and passion for their community.

As one of the largest employers in Harwich and the East of England’s largest trust port we were delighted to once again sponsor the Tendring Youth Awards” says Harwich Haven Authority CEO, Neil Glendinning

I continue to be inspired by the great work both young people and adults are doing to make improvements in their local communities. Everyone should be very proud of what they have achieved.”

Alongside the award presentations were performances by Stagestruck and Harwich Sing Tendring Voices, as well as speeches by dignitaries Mr Nigel Spencer, Her Majesty’s Deputy Lord-Lieutenant for Essex, and Mr Nick Alston, High Sheriff of Essex.

In addition to sponsoring the overall event, Harwich Haven Authority championed two specific awards categories – Community Improvement and Unsung Hero.

The Community Improvement award was won by the Multi-Schools Council who work to break down the negative perceptions of children with Special Educational Needs (SEND) and mental health difficulties in the community. Last summer they climbed Mount Snowdown to raise awareness that SEND children can conquer mountains and reach their potential, raising more than £3000.

Chris Bareham who runs the Westcliff Youth Theatre won the Unsung Hero award. Chris encourages children to be the best they can be and helps them to flourish regardless of their ability.

Harwich Haven Authority and partners support first lobster hatchery on the Essex coastline

Harwich Haven Authority, and a joint venture between dredging contractors Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord, is delighted to announce that it is supporting a local lobster hatchery, which aims to  improve the sustainability of the lobster population on the North-East Essex Coast, England.

The project is being led by the newly created Community Interest Company, Thames Estuary Lobster Hatchery. The hatchery, the first of its kind on the North-East Essex/Thames coast, is based in Brightlingsea, Essex.

“As a local fisherman I’m committed to ensuring that our industry is sustainable,” says Gary Humm, owner of the Thames Estuary Lobster Hatchery.”

“I have been working closely with the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) who  closely monitor the local lobster population. While lobsters, and crabs, are not at immediate risk of decline, it’s important that we introduce management measures to ensure their continued sustainability.  The Lobster Hatchery will hopefully support the longer-term management of the lobster population.

“I’m very grateful to Harwich Haven Authority, Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord for their help with the creation of the Hatchery.  I’m also lucky to have a great family and a local community that are 100% behind me. Over the past few months, we’ve been busy installing specialist equipment and preparing for the release of our first batch of lobster hatchlings, which we hope will go into the waters of the Haven in early June.

“In addition to harvesting eggs from locally caught Berried Hens (egg carrying lobsters) and maturing them through to hatchlings ready for release, we have also developed an educational programme to raise awareness about lobsters, native fish, biodiversity and wider marine conservation concerns.

“We’ve built a great classroom space at the Hatchery and we can’t wait to welcome visitors along to see the life cycle of a lobster up close – from a tiny egg to a hatchling. My big hope is that children will learn more about the wider marine environment and why it’s so important to protect it.”

Leading dredging specialists Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord have been awarded a joint contract by Harwich Haven Authority to carry out works on its £120 million harbour improvement project to deepen the Haven approach channel and the inner harbour. This nationally significant project is set to futureproof the Haven ports capacity to handle the largest container vessels in operation.

All parties are very focused on supporting sustainable projects that have beneficial outcomes for people living in and around the Haven. Working closely with the local Harwich Fisherman’s Association it was recognised that supporting biodiversity, sustainability and the management of the lobster population in the Haven would be an excellent project to support.

Trevor Armstrong, secretary, Harwich Fisherman’s Association commented: “We are delighted that Harwich Haven Authority and their contractors Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord are supporting the Thames Estuary Lobster Hatchery. Any initiative that supports the long-term sustainability of the lobster population is very much welcomed by our members.”

Neil Glendinning, CEO, Harwich Haven Authority added: “Our role as a trust port is to Protect, Conserve and Improve the Haven for the benefit of all stakeholders. Importantly, we are also committed to ensuring that future generations can also enjoy and benefit from it too.

“I’m delighted that we, and our partners Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord, have been able to support this initiative to increase lobster stocks and improve biodiversity in the Haven waters. I can think of no better legacy to our major capital harbour improvement project than ensuring the sustainability of the lobster population in our waters.

“It’s a long-term investment for us because it will be at least five years before the young lobster hatchlings mature to adulthood. We will continue to work closely with Gary and his team at the Hatchery and monitor progress through our own research programme.”
