The waters of the Haven are now open for boating and angling

We have been following the Government’s advice in respect of Coronavirus and have put measures in place to limit risks to stakeholders, our staff, emergency services and the public.

Over the past few days the government has announced, through  DEFRA and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, that some leisure activities, including boating and angling could resume.

The British Ports Association and the UK Harbour Masters’ Association are seeking clarification on the detail of this announcement with the Government at national level.

Specific guidance is expected shortly. Therefore, until we have confirmation of these details, the Authority’s visitor pontoons at Ha’penny Pier will remain closed. Once clarification of any remaining government restrictions or provisions become clear we will review the decision as to whether we re-open the visitor pontoons.

However, in line with the latest advice, the Authority can confirm that it is now permissible to use the waters of the Haven for boating and angling. If your boat is kept in a marina or other facility, then you will need to liaise directly with them to arrange access to your boat. Please follow – and adhere to – the latest government guidelines that state that no-one should stay overnight anywhere other than their own home. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has produced this useful FAQ for leisure vessel users – www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-environment-food-rural-affairs.

Please be mindful that these facilities will need to put measures in place to ensure your and their own staff safety before granting access.  Safety of all stakeholders on the Haven’s waters is paramount. If you do choose to venture out onto the water once again, please be mindful of your actions and make sure that they are not likely to increase risks to any other people using those waters.

All leisure vessels users should also be advised that the Royal Yachting Association makes it clear in their latest statement that they are still ‘engaging with the RNLI and representatives from the ports and leisure marine industry to help ensure a safe return to recreational boating activity. – www.rya.org.uk.

COVID-19: Leisure vessel community update | May 2020

We would like to remind all leisure vessels users that they should continue to refrain from using the waters of Haven ports until further details of the Prime Minister’s briefing (10 May 2020) are made available from the government. The guidance is in place to protect individuals, port workers and the maritime emergency services.

As soon as we receive further details from government we will communicate to the leisure vessel community in our area.

Anglers should also be advised that fishing from Ha’penny Pier, Harwich, is also still prohibited.

Leisure vessel community update: COVID-19 – 3 April 2020

We know we can count on the support of the leisure vessel community at this difficult time as we focus on keeping essential supplies flowing into the UK via Haven ports.

Please keep off the waters of Harwich Harbour and the rivers Stour and Orwell until further notice.

Stay at home, stay safe and support the NHS.

Harwich Haven Authority: Keeping trade flowing into Haven Ports

We are working hard at Harwich Haven Authority to ensure food and other essential medical supplies continue to flow into the Haven Ports. With nearly 40% of all UK container traffic arriving into our ports it is vital that we protect our employees from Covid-19, maintain our operations and continue to support the UK supply chain.

We have introduced the following measures:

  • All vessels arriving in the Haven from foreign ports must submit a Maritime Declaration of Health before a pilot boards the vessel or that vessel is allowed into port.
  • Recommended social distancing has been introduced across our operations.
  • We have closed our Vessel Traffic Services Operations Centre at Harwich to all non-essential staff.
  • Cleaning regimes have been reinforced across our premises and aboard our fleet of vessels. In addition all personnel using our Pilot Launches or visiting our premises will be asked to use hand sanitising products on entry and exit.
  • All non-essential face to face meeting, both on and off our premises, have been cancelled or rearranged to use video conferencing technology.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with Government agencies to make any necessary adjustment to our operating procedures in line with official guidance.

REVISED Important Information: Revisions to the usage of the mooring facilities on Ha’penny Pier to manage the spread of the COVID-19 virus

To manage the current Covid-19 virus outbreak we have revised the mooring usage on the Ha’penny Pier pontoons.

With immediate effect, and until further notice, leisure-type vessels are not permitted to berth on the Ha’penny pontoon facilities. This action has been taken to protect our employees and aligns to current Government guidance to stay at home if possible.

The revised usage notice does not apply to registered fishermen who can  continue to use the pontoons.

POSTPONED: Harwich Maritime Festival 2020

After very careful consideration, we have taken the sad decision to postpone this year’s Maritime Festival, which was due to take place on 8 August 2020, to a yet to be confirmed date in 2021.

It is not a decision we have taken lightly as the event was part of the national Mayflower 2020  celebrations and an occasion many visitors and local residents look forward to each year. However, at this very uncertain time we believe that postponing the event is the best course of action.

Many of our partners, suppliers, traders and members of the local community have already put lots of hard work into organising this year’s event and we extend our heartfelt thanks to them all.

We hope to be able to welcome everyone back to the festival in 2021.

Thank you
