More than 100 schoolchildren from Essex and Suffolk are set to learn about the exciting world of opportunities in the maritime industry at an upcoming careers festival.

Harwich Haven Authority (HHA), one of the UK’s most important trust ports, is hosting the inaugural ‘Haven of Opportunities’ careers festival at The Waterfront in Harwich on Friday, October 16.

Pupils from four schools will be attending on the day, with exhibitors including the Port of Felixstowe, Harwich International Port, Freeport East and Boskalis Westminster.

Children will also hear from speakers representing a range of roles in the maritime industry, including pilotage.

Youngsters will then spend time getting hands-on with interactive activities planned, such as a boat buoyancy challenge and stepping into the roles of Haven operatives like pilots, vessel traffic services (VTS), tug and pilot launch crews, to solve a fictional challenge of bringing a deep water vessel safely into the harbour.

Helen Rudd, Sustainability and Partnerships Director at HHA, said:

“We can’t wait to introduce more students to the wonders of the maritime industry.

“There are so many exciting and rewarding opportunities, both at sea and on land, in areas ranging from pilotage and engineering to navigation and logistics.

“We look forward to welcoming the students for what’s set to be a great day.”

Steve Beel, CEO of Freeport East, said:

“Freeport East is pleased to partner with Harwich Haven Authority for the inaugural ‘A Haven of Opportunities’ skills festival.

“As our local economy grows and evolves, a key priority for Freeport East is creating new economic and employment opportunities.

“This event provides a valuable opportunity to engage directly with local employers and ensure that Harwich’s skills and workforce priorities are properly reflected within the Local Skills Improvement Plan.”

HHA will be sharing updates on the event across their social media channels via www.facebook.com/harwichhaven and www.linkedin.com/company/harwich-haven-authority.
