Capt. Ian Love honoured with the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service

03 September 2025

We’re proud to share some fantastic news: Senior Pilot Capt. Ian Love has been awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service – one of the highest accolades in the maritime sector.

Ian is among just twelve British seafarers recognised this year for going above and beyond the call of duty. The medal, which marks its 20th anniversary today on Merchant Navy Day (3 September), celebrates the dedication, service, and impact of those who make an exceptional contribution to the UK’s maritime community.

The Merchant Navy has been the backbone of Britain’s trade and security since 1835, transporting cargo and people in both peace and wartime. The medal recognises individuals who continue that proud legacy.

With 44 years of dedicated service, Capt. Ian Love has shown outstanding leadership and commitment to the Merchant Navy and UK pilotage sector. Starting at age 17, his career progressed from Junior Deck Rating to Chief Officer, including service during the Falklands campaign. Since 1994, he has focused on pilotage, notably improving ULCC handling at Harwich Haven Authority. His work has advanced safety and efficiency through simulation-based collaboration with tug masters, VTS officers, and pilots, making a lasting impact on industry practices and standards.

For the past 11 years, he has led simulator training at HR Wallingford (UK), ensuring a fair and rigorous pilot recruitment process. His notable achievements include:

  • Delivering 90 courses integrating pilot exemption holders with pilots, tug masters, and VTS officers.
  • Advancing escort towage training, helping establish Harwich Haven Authority, Svitzer Felixstowe, and HR Wallingford as a leading authority in Northern Europe.
  • Pioneering indirect pushing techniques, trialled in simulation before real-world application.

His contributions have enhanced safety and efficiency at Harwich Haven Authority and influenced standards at ports globally.

Of his award, Capt. Ian Love said:

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service – a recognition that belongs equally to all those who have supported me over the years. This award reflects the encouragement, teamwork, and professionalism of so many colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career. I am grateful to have been able to contribute in some small way to an industry that continues to mean so much to me.”

Maritime Minister Mike Kane said:

“It is incredibly inspiring to hear about the dedication, bravery, and outstanding service of all this year’s seafarers, each of whom have gone above and beyond in their roles and are more than deserving of this special award. I am so proud of the UK Merchant Navy who continue to go beyond the call of duty to keep our country safe and moving, and I congratulate this year’s recipients on their remarkable achievements.”

Stuart Rivers, CEO of Merchant Navy Welfare Board, said:

“Huge congratulations to this year’s Merchant Navy Medal recipients. Each one represents the very best of our maritime community — people who show resilience, dedication and selflessness every single day. Their impact goes far beyond ships and crews, shaping the strength and spirit of our entire industry.”

Ian will formally receive his medal at a State Ceremony later this year.

This recognition is a true reflection of our core value of Leading with Expertise. Ian’s achievement shines a light not only on his dedication but also on the vital role of the UK’s merchant navy today.

Please join us in congratulating Ian on this remarkable honour.
