EventsThe Harwich Kindertransport Memorial and Learning Trust (HKMLT) is pleased to present a very special exhibition at the Harwich Arts & Heritage Centre from Wednesday 24th – Wednesday 31st January 2024. The exhibition, “Safe Haven – Leslie Brent” highlights his amazing journey on the Kindertransport – one of the largest acts of rescue in the whole of the Nazi era – and the life he made for himself in Britain. He was one of the 10,000 mostly Jewish children who were sent to safety in Britain from 1938-1939, and like many of the children, he arrived in the Essex port of Harwich.
The exhibition coincides with and commemorates the 85th Anniversary of the Kindertransport as well as Holocaust Memorial Day 2024. HKMLT unveiled a memorial ‘Safe Haven’ on the Harwich quayside in September 2022. For further information please visit www.kindertransport-memorial.org

On this tour along the Essex coast at the mouth of the River Stour, we will walk from the seaside town of Dovercourt to the pier at Harwich, a traditional point of arrivals and departures.
Rob will be talking about lighthouses, of which there are some nice examples on the walk, and will be also walking past the repair yard belonging to Trinity House, who look after navigational aids around the UK. Rob will also talk about shipbuilding and will walk past the wonderful treadwheel crane built in 1667. Rob will talk about some of the ships built in Harwich, the most famous being the Mayflower, which is believed to have been built in the towns shipyards. Thames barges were also constructed here.
Laura will talk about able seamen in the Age of Sail, whose jobs involved running up rigging during storms, manning guns during battles and dealing with boredom in the doldrums. Men (and some cross-dressed women) volunteered for a life at sea in large numbers, and some were forced through impressment when the navy needed them.
Laura will also mention Arthur Ransome’s intrepid Swallows who Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea and Harwich’s connections to colonies across the Atlantic.
You will take in views across the estuary to the container port at Felixstowe, while the town of Harwich has some fine Georgian architecture and some good pubs to explore after the walk.
The walk is about two miles and finishes at Harwich Pier which is a short walk from Harwich Town Station.

Belinda O’Hooley is an exceptionally gifted pianist, singer, songwriter, and composer who has become renowned for her highly individual, emotional, yet sensitive musicality. She is also one half of the much-loved Yorkshire folk duo O’Hooley & Tidow alongside her wife Heidi Tidow; together described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional songwriters.’ The duo have been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune to Sally Wainwright’s hit BBC1/HBO drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, an acting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley, Radio 4 Woman’s Hour and concerts that sell out months in advance.
Belinda is also known for her inventive, minimalist, sometimes flamboyant accompanying of folk luminaries including Rufus Wainwright, Nic Jones, Jackie Oates and the Mercury nominated; Rachel Unthank and The Winterset.
Her solo album ‘Inversions’ showcases Belinda’s abilities as a composer and pianist with many of the piano pieces inspired by the songs and tunes her father inherited from a long line of male musicians in the hills of the West coast of rural Ireland. Belinda: the first woman in her family to reclaim the tradition, has found the freedom to express the music of her ancestors in her very own, unconventional way, evolving and migrating into something you could describe as an inversion: a reversal of the norm.
Belinda O’Hooley is an artist truly at one with her instrument.
